Artificial turf is durable but not indestructible. Furniture burns, dog wear-through, impact damage, seam lift, and edge separation all happen. Most damage is repairable, often without replacing the entire install. This guide covers the common scenarios, what's DIY-friendly, and when to call us.
Common Damage Scenarios
- Cigarette or match burn: melted spot in the fiber
- Hot grill or fire-pit damage: larger melted area
- Dog wear-through: exposed backing in high-impact zone
- Furniture compression: flattened fibers under stationary heavy objects
- Seam lift: turf edge pulling away from adjacent section
- Perimeter edge separation: turf pulling away from edge restraint or hardscape
- Impact tear: cut from sharp object dropped or dragged on the surface
DIY-Friendly Repairs
Small burn or melt (under 4 inches diameter)
Cut out the damaged area in a clean square or rectangle, install a matching turf patch (we keep batch numbers for clients to ensure color match), seam with synthetic turf adhesive and seam tape underneath. With the right materials, this is a 1-hour DIY repair.
Furniture compression
Brushing the affected fibers usually restores upright pile within a week. For severe compression that won't recover, applying water and brushing repeatedly accelerates recovery. No replacement needed.
Seam tape lift (small area)
If the seam lift is under 1 foot, applying outdoor synthetic turf adhesive under the lifted edge and pressing it flat for 24 hours typically resolves. Hardware stores stock the adhesive.
When to Call a Professional
Larger burn or melt (over 4 inches)
Larger patches need precise cutting, color-match verification with multiple samples, and proper seam reinforcement. Professional repair preserves the install warranty; DIY repairs on larger areas often void it.
Dog wear-through to backing
If the dog has worn through fibers to expose the backing, the entire wear zone needs replacement. Professional repair includes backing inspection, drainage check, and product replacement matching the original SYNLawn batch.
Seam lift over 1 foot or extending the full length
Long seam failures suggest base prep issues or product failure, not just adhesive failure. Professional inspection diagnoses the underlying cause and addresses it; cosmetic re-glue without addressing the root cause leads to repeat failures.
Base settlement (uneven surface)
If the surface has developed dips, low spots, or uneven grade, the base aggregate has settled. Repair involves lifting the turf, leveling the base, recompacting, and replacing the turf. Not a DIY scope.
Warranty Considerations
SYNLawn 15-year manufacturer warranty covers fiber and backing failure under normal use. The Turf Soldier 1-year workmanship warranty covers seam, base, and drainage failure due to installation error within one year. Improper DIY repair can void portions of these warranties; we advise calling for any non-trivial repair to keep warranty intact.
Preventing Damage
Use heat barriers under grills and fire pits. Move heavy furniture occasionally to prevent permanent compression. Keep sharp objects away from the surface. Promptly address dog wear zones (rotation of activity, monthly brushing). Inspect perimeter edges annually for separation.
