Not all artificial grass is the same product. SYNLawn alone offers 8 distinct product lines, and the broader synthetic turf market has dozens. The right product for a Newport Beach coastal estate is wrong for a Burbank pet household; the right product for a Calabasas backyard putting green is wrong for an Irvine front yard. This guide explains the technical differences that matter and how to match product to property.
Pile Height: What It Affects
Pile height is the length of the fiber from backing to tip. Range: 0.5 inches (putting green) to 2.5 inches (premium residential). Shorter pile reads as manicured and golf-course; longer pile reads as natural meadow. Shorter pile drains faster and dries faster. Longer pile feels softer underfoot and looks fuller, but accumulates debris more readily. Most residential installs use 1.5 to 2 inch pile.
Fiber Profile
Fiber profile is the cross-sectional shape of each turf strand. C-shape, V-shape, S-shape, and W-shape are common; each has different appearance and resilience characteristics. C-shape and V-shape recover quickly from foot traffic. S-shape and W-shape have richer color saturation but recover more slowly. SYNLawn's Premium and Lush product lines use proprietary fiber profiles that combine appearance and resilience.
Backing Perforation Density
Backing perforations let liquid drain through the turf to the base aggregate. Standard residential turf has roughly 100 perforations per square foot. Pet turf (SYNLawn PetSystem) has roughly 400 perforations per square foot for accelerated urine drainage. Putting green turf has fewer, smaller perforations to retain ball-roll consistency. Match perforation density to the use case.
Infill Selection
- Silica sand: standard for residential turf, provides ballast and fiber resilience
- Antimicrobial silica: standard for pet turf, inhibits bacterial growth
- Crumb rubber: rare in residential, common in commercial sport surfaces
- Organic infill (cork, walnut, coconut): premium option, lower heat retention
- EnviroFill: SYNLawn proprietary acrylic-coated silica, antimicrobial and lower heat
HeatBlock Fiber Technology
SYNLawn HeatBlock is fiber-level technology that reflects solar energy and reduces surface temperature up to 20 degrees compared to standard synthetic turf. Critical for inland SoCal markets (SFV, Conejo Valley, inland OC, inland San Diego). Not required for coastal markets (Santa Monica, Manhattan Beach, Newport, La Jolla) where marine layer keeps surface temperatures manageable. We default to HeatBlock east of the 405, east of I-5, and inland in Ventura County.
Matching Product to Property
- Coastal residential: SYNLawn Precision or Lush, no HeatBlock requirement
- Inland residential: SYNLawn Precision or Lush with HeatBlock fiber technology
- Pet households: SYNLawn PetSystem with antimicrobial Sanitized fiber and accelerated drainage
- Putting greens: SYNLawn Precision Putt with proper silica sand infill
- Playgrounds: SYNLawn PlayGround with shock pad for ASTM F1292 fall-height rating
- Heavy-traffic commercial: SYNLawn ProLuxe with reinforced backing
- Premium estate: SYNLawn Premium for richest color and pile depth
What Doesn't Matter
Marketing emphasis on "realistic look" is largely meaningless without specifying fiber profile, color blend, and pile structure. "Soft underfoot" claims should be backed by pile height and fiber profile data. "Eco-friendly" claims should specify USDA-certified soy backing or recyclable program participation. We name the specific SYNLawn product line on every quote; generic "premium turf" language is a warning sign in any contractor's proposal.
