The Transformation.
Before
AfterThe Challenge
The homeowner had a 900 square foot side-yard space between the main residence and a pool house running through tired Bermuda grass and a cracked concrete walkway. The aesthetic goal was a unified pavers-and-turf design with a paver ribbon walkway running through SYNLawn turf bays, integrating the residence and pool house with consistent material lines. The property is in a Beverly Hills HOA-overlay zone with architectural review for any street-visible landscape modification, and the side-yard is partially visible from the main street.
The Approach
We specified SYNLawn Lush for its premium pile depth and color saturation, complementing the architectural-grade pavers selected by the homeowner's landscape designer. The cracked concrete walkway was demolished and replaced with a paver ribbon design integrated into the new turf area: 24-inch paver bands ran in a geometric pattern between turf zones. Base prep coordinated paver bedding (Class II road base, 4-inch depth, fines layer) with turf base (decomposed granite, geotextile, leveling layer) at consistent finish grade. Edges between turf and pavers used hidden steel restraint to keep the paver lines crisp without visible borders. We submitted the design package to the Beverly Hills HOA architectural review and approval came back in 22 days.
The Outcome
The completed install delivered the geometric pavers-and-turf design the homeowner specified, with crisp lines maintaining their dimensional accuracy through the first season's foot traffic. The homeowner qualified for a $2,700 MWD turf removal rebate (900 sq ft at $3 per sqft). HOA architectural review approval came back faster than expected. Total project came in at $17,500 before rebate, $14,800 net after rebate.
Project FAQ
Common Questions.
Turf base and paver base settle at slightly different rates if not coordinated. We build paver and turf base zones to consistent depth and density (4-inch decomposed granite for turf, 4-inch Class II for pavers, both compacted in two lifts to 95 percent density) so the finished grades stay flush over the project life.
