The Transformation.
Before
AfterThe Challenge
The homeowner in a North Ranch property wanted a 750 square foot inner courtyard converted from struggling fescue lawn into a pavers-and-turf integrated entertaining space. Thousand Oaks summer afternoons regularly exceed 100 degrees, so heat management on both pavers and turf was critical for comfortable foot traffic. The North Ranch HOA architectural review applied with rigorous aesthetic standards. The courtyard wraps three sides of the residence so all four wall views had to coordinate, and the existing slate residence walls dictated a warm earth-tone color palette.
The Approach
We specified SYNLawn Premium with HeatBlock fiber technology for the turf zones, which reduces surface temperature up to 20 degrees compared to standard synthetic turf. Pavers selected by the homeowner's landscape designer were warm earth-tone Belgian block. The design integrated paver pathways and patio zones with turf bays, all at consistent finish grade with hidden steel restraint between materials. Base prep coordinated paver bedding (4-inch Class II road base) with turf base (4-inch decomposed granite with geotextile barrier) at matched depths and density. We submitted the full design package to North Ranch HOA architectural review with material samples for the slate residence wall integration; approval came back in 32 days. The Calleguas MWD turf removal rebate was filed by the homeowners.
The Outcome
The completed courtyard delivered the integrated pavers-and-turf design with consistent grade lines and warm earth-tone color coordination across all four residence-wall views. SYNLawn HeatBlock kept the turf zones playable through summer; surface temperatures during peak-heat afternoons measured 15 to 20 degrees cooler than equivalent standard-turf comparison samples. The homeowners qualified for a $2,250 Calleguas MWD rebate. Total project came in at $14,250 before rebate, $12,000 net after rebate.
Project FAQ
Common Questions.
Independent testing and our own field measurement shows SYNLawn HeatBlock reduces surface temperature 15 to 20 degrees compared to standard synthetic turf under direct summer sun. On a 100-degree afternoon, HeatBlock turf surface measures around 130 to 140 degrees compared to standard synthetic at 150 to 160 degrees. Light spray rinse drops the temperature further.
