The Challenge

The homeowner wanted a 600 square foot backyard putting green with 4 cups, custom contours that mimicked their home course's signature breaks, and integration with an existing slate patio. The site was on a slight back-to-front slope (about 4 percent) which had to be regraded for putting roll consistency without disturbing the existing patio drainage. The Oaks HOA architectural review applied. The homeowners wanted afternoon shade for summer playability without trees blocking sightlines from the main residence.

The Approach

We specified SYNLawn Precision Putt for its tight-knit fiber profile and roll-true characteristics. Base prep was 4 inches of decomposed granite compacted in two 2-inch lifts to 95 percent density, with a finer leveling layer of crushed quartz fines on top. We engineered the contour map by hand-grading the base to match the homeowner's specified breaks: a back-to-front gentle slope on the main green, a knob to the front-right cup, and a subtle tier separating the rear two cups. Cups were set with proper ferrules and removable plugs. The patio drainage was preserved by routing the green's permeable base runoff to the existing patio drain. A retractable shade sail was specified by the landscape designer to provide afternoon shade without permanent visual obstruction.

The Outcome

Roll consistency tested at Stimpmeter 9.5 across all four cups, well within tournament-grade range. The contour map preserved the home-course breaks the homeowner specified. The HOA architectural review approval came back in 28 days. Total project came in at $14,400. The homeowner used the green for daily practice through the first summer; surface temperature stayed playable through August with the shade sail deployed.

Project FAQ

Common Questions.

Roll speed comes from three factors: fiber pile height (shorter is faster), infill depth and type (more sand infill is faster), and base compaction (firmer is faster). SYNLawn Precision Putt with proper silica sand infill and 95-percent compacted base typically tests at Stimpmeter 9 to 10. We can tune within that range during install.
